Whale watching in Brazil

The whale-watching season is now open on the southern coast of Brazil so now is a great time to see these magnificent creatures up close and personal.

In the south of Brazil the Southern Coast of Santa Catarina becomes the stage for an amazing natural spectacle, with the arrival of the Southern Right Whales. Escaping the Antarctic winter, they migrate north in search of warmer and calmer waters for reproduction and nurturing of their young calves. In the small, half-moon shaped bays of Santa Catarina, they come very close to the shore and on clear days they can be seen from your hotel room or the beachfront. The boat trips though are a must for a close encounter with these giant mammals on a holiday to Brazil.

As a specialist Brazil tour operator we offer the opportunity to see whales in their natural habitat.

Simon Williams, founder of Bespoke Brazil, says, “You don’t immediately associate whale watching with Brazil but the country makes for an excellent holiday destination to see these beautiful creatures in the world.”

“When summer arrives in the southern hemisphere, right whales abandon their traditional feeding grounds, in colder latitudes, and seek the shelter of coastal lands where their reproductive cycle takes place. From July to November a sizeable number of right whales gather in the coast of Santa Catarina and the best period to go whale-watching in the region is from the middle of August till the middle of October.”

“A great source of information on whale-watching in Santa Catarina is the NGO Projeto Baleia Franca which keeps an up-to-date chart with all the daily sightings of whales, showing how many creatures were seen, and where.”

"Praia do Rosa is a popular place to stay with some great accommodation options, including the gorgeous Quinta do Bucanero hotel, yet still very close to the fabulous city of Florianópolis so it is easy to create great holiday possibilities."

"Whales also appear elsewhere in the country and within Bahia lies the aptly named Whale Coast and the Abrolhos Archipelago, an area of extreme biological importance and the home, in the second half of the year, to shoals of Humpback whales. The south is the more reliable area to see whales though."
